- GRADE II LISTED GEORGIAN CONSERVATION PROJECT
Town End House sits prominently on the east side of Great Limber, instantly recognisable to anyone passing through this historic Lincolnshire village. This Grade II listed property, built in the mid-1800s, carries nearly two centuries of local history, having served the same family for almost 200 years before recently becoming available through the Brocklesby Estate.
The building’s rich heritage includes its previous incarnation as the village abattoir and butcher’s shop, with the last butcher, Don, calling it home for many years. After standing empty whilst renovation plans were carefully developed, this characterful property has now been sensitively transformed into a comfortable family home whilst preserving its historic charm.
THE CHALLENGE
The property’s roadside position on the main route through Great Limber meant that traffic noise from the busy road was affecting the comfort of the interior spaces. The existing single-glazed windows, whilst period-appropriate, offered little protection from external noise and contributed to heat loss.
The five original sliding sash windows on the front elevation required extensive repair work. Given their prominent position and the building’s Grade II listing, any replacement needed to:
- Maintain the authentic Georgian character and proportions
- Meet modern conservation standards
- Significantly reduce noise transmission from the busy road
- Improve thermal efficiency while respecting the building’s heritage
OUR SOLUTION
Working closely with conservation guidelines, we designed and manufactured five new sliding sash windows using our specialist conservation double-glazed sliding sash window system. Each window was carefully crafted to replicate the original Georgian proportions whilst incorporating modern performance standards.
Our craftsmen carefully measured each opening, as Georgian windows rarely conform to standard sizes. The box frames were designed and manufactured to accommodate the specific requirements of each window position.
Using traditional joinery techniques, combined with modern precision, we manufactured five bespoke Georgian sashes and then glazed with the 4/16/4 Georgian style glass units, comprising toughened K glass, warm edge bar and Argon filled. The frames were fully draught-stripped before painting in a custom white.
The windows were installed, the sashes corded, and the internal beading and traditional sash fasteners fitted. The original internal linings and shutters were reinstalled and painted.

THE RESULT
The completed windows have dramatically transformed the living experience at Townend House. The noise reduction from the busy road has been remarkable, creating a peaceful interior environment that complements the building’s new role as a family home.
The authentic appearance ensures the windows look exactly as they would have when Don, the last village butcher, lived there, maintaining the property’s connection to Great Limber’s heritage. The improved thermal performance enhances comfort whilst meeting modern energy efficiency standards.
Most importantly, the windows preserve the building’s Georgian character whilst providing 21st-century performance – a perfect example of how heritage craftsmanship can meet contemporary living standards.
